CHAPTER TWO

ANNIE MEEKS HAD never been this close to a real, live billionaire before. Or really any powerful being, so drenched in privilege that he was languid about it.

But she had been to a zoo or two in her time and really, this was no different from standing at one of the big cat enclosures, watching a creature who should have been impossible slink about before her, all sleek and mesmerizing, as if to distract the unwary from the fangs.

She knew that was fanciful, at best. The reality was that Tiziano Accardi was no otherworldly jaguar, prowling about London, a creature of myth and legend.

He was a man. A man who was wearing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of bespoke attire, which, like everything about him, was so obviously expensive that he could get away with wearing it all so carelessly. But he was a man despite all this.

He was also astonishing.

Annie had seen his face on a thousand tabloids, like everyone else who drew breath. In pictures, the ethereal quality of his beauty was what came through. The operatic cheekbones. The sensual mouth. The contrast between all that and thick, dark hair that tousled about over moody blue eyes.

In person, however, there was that voice of his, like sin distilled into wonder. More worrying, there was a kind of brooding masculinity that poured off him, making her think less about the things that made him beautiful and more about those things that made him a man.

She had to remind herself, sharply, that gifted as he might have been in physical attributes, it was the gift of his particular genealogy that truly made him who and what he was. Generations of wealth and importance, handed down from parents to child again and again, so that it was no wonder he thought he was God’s gift.

There was not a single thing in his life to indicate otherwise.

But that didn’t explain what was happening here. Or the staggering thing he’d just said.

“I don’t know what you normally do in stairwells,” Annie found herself saying, which wasn’t wise. Particularly in that tone of voice.

Then again, she’d quit her boring and yet stressful job here at Accardi Industries. And she would have to deal with that later and all the ramifications of it, she knew that. Truth was, she already regretted it. Annie was tempted to simply set off down the stairs and go right back to work, assuming—correctly, she was sure—that Tiziano Accardi could no more pick one secretary out of a pack than he could do his own washing up. He’d never worked a day in a job that wasn’t granted to him by virtue of his surname. She doubted he even knew how to locate the lower levels of the building where the common folk toiled away.

But she’d given him her name, hadn’t she?

She could feel the panic creep in, because scruples were all well and good, but they wouldn’t do a thing to pay her debts. And well did she know it.
